Citation & Bibliography Guidance

I highly recommend using NoodleBib to create your bibliographies and works cited pages for assignments.  NoodleBib can also be used to take notes.  That way your notes are easily connected to the proper sources, and they are accessible from any computer with internet access.  No forgetting your notecards at school!

The username and password for the school's NoodleBib account are available through Edline.  You will then need to login (or create) to your personal account.  When asked which format to use - always choose MLA Advanced.

Citation can get very complicated, and doing it from scratch becomes extremely difficult when you add in things like reprints, databases, and websites.  Using NoodleBib lets you focus on the information, and the software takes care of the nitty-griity formatting issues.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember when citing your source is to identify the ORIGINAL type of material.  Just because something is online, it is not automatically a website.
A journal article is still a journal article if you saw it through a database.
An encyclopedia article is still an encyclopedia article even if you are looking at it online.

For online sources - did you see it FREE or through a SUBSCRIPTION DATABASE?
If you had to login to access the article - it's a database!  (Lucky you - SSDS pays for the subscription!)

Make sure you check the advice next to each entry box to make sure you enter information correctly.

You may share your citations with me, Mrs. Ulric by choosing the "share" option at the top of your bibliography.  Enter your name.  The  class name is Ulric - make sure to email me and let me know that  you shared your bibliography - I can then add comments to guide you in revising it.

Help with the Research Process

The following links provide guidance on the process of writing a research paper, and evaluating your sources.

or, Why It's a Good Idea to Evaluate Web Sources
Evaluation criteria with examples, to see if a website you found is reliable and worthwhile. Very few websites will meet all the guidelines mentioned, but the site will help you think critically about the online information you find.

Copyright and Intellectual Property Issues

Giving credit when you use other people's work and ideas is important for quality scholarship, academic honesty, and as an aspect of ethical behavior.  Sometimes the problems are intentional, but they are sometimes inadvertent.  In this changing world of digital media, it is an issue fraught with complexities.  basically, when in doubt - cite your source!  Remember - it takes as much effort to plagiarize well as it does to do the assignment right!  No effort plagiarism is easy to catch!

Here is some basic information on plagiarism and how to avoid it.

And below you will find a changing list of articles and blog posts that consider the issues of copyright, intellectual property, and plagiarism.
