Athletics & Physical Education : Fall Preseason Attendance Policy
The athletic committee met several times in the fall of 2002 and discussed the issue of fall sports practices prior to the start of school. On December 16, 2002, the committee passed the following policy.
1) It is strongly encouraged and recommended that student athletes attend all pre season practices. However, a coach can validate an excused absence provided the athlete communicated this well in advance of the absence. In consultation with the athletic director, the coach has the discretion to determine excused absences. Solomon Schechter Day School notes Jewish Youth activities, such as USY/Kadima Encampment as excused absences for part of the practice time, not the entire pre season. Excessive excused absences, more that 40%, or even one unexcused absence could result in the athlete being dismissed from or prohibited from joining the team.
2) The athlete must attend six practices beginning on the first day of the state’s official first day of practice, before he/she is eligible to play in a game or scrimmage.
3) A potential captain needs to demonstrate additional and exceptional leadership and commitment to the sport.
4) The coach and athletic director will determine final eligibility.
