College Guidance: The SAT

Overview

The following is a brief introduction to the world of the SAT Reasoning Test and the SAT Subject Tests. It is intended as an overview to help students do some preliminary planning for junior and senior year. Any such planning, however, should be tailored to the specific needs of the individual student.

1. It is generally recommended that students take the SAT once in the spring of the junior year and once in the fall of the senior year. One need not worry about a lower score on one of the two tests since most colleges will consider a student's highest verbal, highest math, and highest witing score even if taken during different administrations of the SAT.

2. On any given test date one may take either the SAT Reasoning Test or anywhere from one to three SAT Subject Tests tests. One may not take the SAT Reasoning Test and an SAT Subject Test on the same day. The SAT Reasoning Test takes four hours; an SAT Subject Test test takes one hour.

3. While virtually all colleges to which our students apply do require the SAT Reasoning Test, most colleges do not require SAT Subject Tests. Students should consult with the Director of College Guidance about the advisability of taking SAT Subject Tests.

4. Those colleges that require SAT Subject Tests usually require two to three. Students should consider taking three Subject Tests, providing colleges with the opportunity to use a student's top two scores.

5. Not all SAT Subject Tests are given on every testing date. The Modern Hebrew exam is given only in June. The French and Spanish Listening exams are given only in November. The French and Spanish exams without listening are administered on all SAT Subject Tests dates except November. The World History exam is given only in December and June. Please visit the College Board website (www.collegeboard.com) for further information.

SAT testing takes place throughout the school year. SSDSEU students are entitled to take the test on Sunday. A special rabbi’s letter (copies available in Guidance) must be sent with SAT registration forms in order for students to be able to take advantage of Sunday testing.

Registering for the SAT

1. Obtain registration booklet. (One is provided in your packet. Additional copies can be obtained from Guidance).

2. Find registration form enclosed in envelope at center of book.

3. To fill out registration form:

  • Follow the instructions in this packet, “How to Complete the SAT Registration Form,” and consult the registration booklet for more detail.
